Anf Curch is already ready for the Sunday function. Let us clap for the Bishop, the Dean and every one who has done so well.

As you have heard, last year on 28th August, the House of Bishops led by God elected my brother Dr. Samuel Kazimba, then Bishop of Mityana  as the 9th Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.

Whereas, Dr. Kazimba is the Ob of the Namirembe Bishop, he is my brother in Christ, my friend and fellowship will continue. Praise God!”

The gift of humility, let me tell you, you can’t just claim it, it’s a gift from God.

And some people will see a humble man and want to play about. A humble man is a wise man.

When you are humble, you are thinking and praying and you give a decission that is well informed. There are those who are proud even among the Bishops and Archbishops, but humility is a gift, praise the Lord.

Am happy, on such in March 7th 1985, an Arsh Wednesday,  I accepted Jesus to be my saviour. Therefore, this is my birthday in Salvation. Tumutendereza Yesu..and up to now am still amazed! A no body, to become somebody in front of every body, without consulting any body and that is God himself.

Stanley Ntagali and maama Beatrice for the work well done. You have all reasons to boast and to thank God, I dont a reason to boast, to brag around, am just beginning. I want to thank the Bishop of Namirembe and maama Faith, thank you. Mityana, the clergy and liaty

COUNSEL NYOMBI: Uganda’s Music a sea of misery with islands of pretences (PART 3)

0

OPINION

IN PARTS 1&2, I was laying the foundation of this subject. In this third and final part, I now tackle the issue and conclude with a painting of the real face of our music indusrty.

I concluded part two, with a point to think over . Its that point and many others that I will summarise with .

Like i said earlier, the dominant music Signatures in Uganda, don’t have many songs . Indeed this is not only here home, but world over.

Peter Andrew other than for his 90s single, “Mysterious girl,” his name is not known beyond this truck. However, it’s a record still worth listening too.

The coming in play of FM radio stations around 1993, gave an uplift and a new direction to our local music. First the radio stations were Mostly English speaking . 88.2, Sanyu Fm forexample, save for African express that ran on Saturday eveinings, didn’t have any programme that would be space for our local music, that much. Even in African express, it was still the hangover of Congo music that had the space.

91.3 capital FM, was, unlike Sanyu, a variety station. I do recall a jingle that went ” variety, is a spice of life. Capital FM………” Capital supported local music but the question is what type of music?

With their audiences relatively similar capital and sanyu nearly shared some music although sanyu was too teenage driven . Capital was a station above the teenage bracket. In this, it chose a few songs from local artists. I must say kads band, Afrigo, amigo wawawa, and again Philly Lutaya, Sammy Kasule, Alex Mukulu’ Banakampala, are the types of songs that found their way on the play list.
Local kadongo kamu, was gradually denied audience in the face of the New stations. This mothered the contemporary Ugandan music on its waves.

Be that as it may, on the other hand, in 1997, came radio one FM 90. This was in its own league. Its music was distinct from the two stations mentioned earlier. The very first song Radio one played on air, showed its an 80s oriented station. AINT NO STOPPING US NOW by Mcfadden.

By now, few musicians found their way to the listeners . With local production starting to pic shape, record labels like No end entertainment of Steve Jean, came up. Dungeon studios by Peter sematimba among others cropped up as well.
Other entities like soul Disco, Deluxe disco gave the race pace and shape. Slowly the Congo based artists were swept out.

A remake of old kindergarten rhymes and primary school songs with a blend of western rap styles was the order of the day. Dan Kazibwe aka Ragga D, Shanks VV D, Rasta Rob MC, Emperor Orlando, Menton summer, Menton Paddy, took the mantle.
I have a friend who did the back up vocals in the signature Dungeon production “Kakokolo” he gave me a narrative how their passion to this record, was cemented to build a signature mark in Uganda’s music. I know “Jaco” you still hold this true.

So this new twist in Uganda’s music, was reflectory that the industry had not yet got a definitive line or genre.

It should be recalled that when the Pearl Of Africa Music Awards was still on, It was disturbing to place some songs in which category. The artist of the year, would sometimes emerge as afrobeat singer of the year.

It’s hence clear that although the radio stations gave our music light, our music until lately, is short of a particular genre.
When the trinity of brothers emerged latter in the early 2000s, -Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi wine, Joseph Mayanja aka Dr . Chameleon and Moses sali aka Bebe cool, Uganda’s music took a whole new direction.

Irrespective of their present definitions and aspirations, I still look at them as the three guys that totally revolutionalaised Uganda’s music. Popular word on streets is that chameleon chased away Congolese music.
The three started with dance hall raggea. Most clubs were dominated by a chaka Demus and pliers duo, for a Friday night old school. Shaba Ranks, Shaggy and buju banton to mention but a few. If you ever stepped in a “disco” and the Dj doesnot play “headshigh” or “Mr. Loverman” or “too young to be my lover” that was a night wasted.
On the other hand, if the DJ missed “feel me flow” by naughty by nature still it was a night wasted.
One night though, Ange Noir or “club ange” as was called. ALEX NDAWULA was the man behind the TT he played MC Kruez’s “Party all night.” It was the first time white smoke was let out in a club in Kampala. Guess what!!! nearly ange remained half empty. People ran out.
However these three new kids on the block, slowly took centre stage with bobiwine’s kagoma blending all clubs local and central.

The next generation of musicians directly or indirectly, hence, came from these three. Now this is where another challenge comes in. Most musicians lack originality. They don’t have a definition. While the three Bobi, Cham and Bebe, were not yet fully established a case in point Joseph Mayanja, gambled with style. He was seen take the line of Tanzanian and Kenyan styles during that time when the two countries dominated the region ‘s music. Latter, he settled home to do club versions of his style.

On the far side, was another group called Clear kut.
Clear Kut was an amalgamation of three hip-hop passion driven friends Papito, The Myth and Navio, they struggled to have an audience that understood their music, something that was hard, given the history I discussed in parts one n two.
I must say those of us who attended transday groves at Club international Muyenga , heritage , Nsambya appreciate the myth was a force to hip-hop. But we were a very small audience to influence the audience to which hip-hop was allien. It’s until yesterday in his working with Vinka, Nwagi in the Amaaso remix, that we can arguably say, The Myth the broke the wall.

Who sets the pace of our music. Is it us the listeners or its the artists?

Its hard to tell Alex Mukulu to come up with a song that will go viral today. But its very easy for Eddy Kenzo to do a song on Monday and by wensday its got 2 million viewers.

Its hard to listen to a Bebe cool song while on a country drive and enjoy it the same way you would if u were watching its vidoe.

Its hard to step to a music shop in Uganda (if any) and ask for an album of Haruna Mubiru just like its hard to pick your phone and request for any song of Coco Fingure.

Its easier to recall the name Madona and her Material gal song, than to recall that Angella kalule was a force during the katikitiki time.

Its easier to list and recall three songs of lucky dube than to recall one song of Shanks VV D? Why yet both, around the same time, had songs!!!

Moses Sekibogo, alias Radio passed away on Feb 01, 2018 despite his absence, his songs command audience than ten living artists who started singing prior to Moses ‘ epitome of his career, including his dualmate Weasel.

This is where the first concern rests. What fails our musicians to hold the mantle? Is it the quality of music? Is it the fast changing aspects in the industry?
When it comes to production. There are so many contemporary modern studios and producers . From Muswangali Makindye, came then Muyenga based Swangs Avenue. A production label that has shaped talent in our industry today. Among others are Team No Sleep all not far from good work.

However there seems to be a missing point in the working relation of these labels and the musicians and their works. The labels seem to exploit the musicians . Their contracts should be given keen attention. Its not by coincidence that a label like TNS is having friction with two notable musicians in a spell of less than three years. Something is not right. How are these works paid for? Who has rights over what? If these areas are not sealed, most musicians are ridding on losses. They are left in misery they are entangled in a machine that just exploits them.

Few musicians do have capability to support them selves in terms of song writing, video shooting and song marketing.
This has left most of them cheated . Others have given up the industry.
Even from the meagre resources they get, they live a luxurious life style. They inevitably find them selves in a dreamline that they are celebrities.

This sees them live in denial. Not every one who picks a microphone is a celebrity neither is everyone a musician.
Many are entertainers who misread the stage to claim to be musicians.
Focus is hence laid on uplifting a lifestyle far from their reach , than concentrating on making real music.

Others don’t understand their comparative advantage. Most female artists are fit and neat for simple family occasions like introductions and birthday or bridal showers. Where they can star as entatainers, a line they deny and hence ride in areas not for their calling.
Musicians have a managerial problem. Most managers exploit and poorly handle the meagre resources acquired from sleepless nights .
Others are under the threat of drug abuse. Its miopic to believe that drugs shape career better than to water it down.
Seeking cheap popularity and self proclaim. A musician comes up with three songs . The fourth song will be named bampalana!!!!! (They hate me).
Excitement has seen some as soon as they enter the game. They fail to make it just like their managers fail to make the a product to stand the test of time.
A few months ago, there was a wave of a young seven year old fresh kid. Where he is me n u know not.
Our industry has now picked shape. Its moving to another stage. Our artists need pay keen attention to their music. Or else many will fall as soon as they come.

WHAT IS AN ‘ENTHRONEMENT’

When a Bishop or an Archbishop is installed and vested with the spiritual authority over a particular jurisdiction, it is called an ‘Enthronement.’ So, the enthronement service is the ceremony in which the outgoing Archbishop transfers spiritual authority to the incoming Archbishop by handing over the pastoral staff, and the Bishops of the Church guide the new Archbishop to his Provincial Chair.  Every Bishop has a special chair, which in Latin is called a “Cathedra.’ A cathedra literally means a chair with armrests. In the Church this special chair or cathedra is a symbol of the teaching authority of the Bishop. The church building in which the cathedra resides is called the Cathedral.Often times, the cathedra is a large chair, slightly elevated above other chairs, and has thus been sometimes described as a ‘Throne.’ Thus, when a Bishop is installed in a Diocese and vested with spiritual authority over that jurisdiction, it is sometimes described as an ‘Enthronement.’

WHERE IS THE ARCHBISHOP’S CATHEDRAL

The Archbishop has two cathedrals. He is the Bishop of Kampala Diocese and his Diocesan Cathedral is All Saints’ Cathedral, Nakasero. He also has a Provincial Cathedral, which is St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe. St. Paul’s Cathedral is also the Diocesan Cathedral for Namirembe Diocese, who has its own Bishop.

It’s this Sunday 01st March 2020

WHY ENTHRONEMENT OF ARCHBISHOP SIGNIFICANT

The Church of Uganda is an independent province of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The Anglican Communion is the world’s third largest family of churches, after the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches. It has 85 million members spread throughout 165 countries. The Church of Uganda is the second largest Province among all the Provinces of the Anglican Communion, with more than 13 million members, which is a little more than one-third the population of Uganda. The Archbishop is the senior leader of the entire Church of Uganda and the chief spokesman for the Church.  As Archbishop, he participates in global leadership meetings.

God’s servants: Dr. Ntagali and Dr. Kazimba

WHO IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE ARCHBISHOP’S ENTHRONMENT

Since the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda is a significant national leader, the service of enthronement will be attended by the President and First Lady, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, the Speaker of Parliament and many other government leaders. Leading businessmen and businesswomen will be in attendance, along with all the Bishops of the Church of Uganda. Likewise, many Archbishops and Bishops from other Anglican Provinces from around the world will be present – from North America to Australia, from Nigeria to Kenya. Clergy and friends of the new Archbishop will also be present. Eleven Archbishops from other Anglican Provinces around the world are expected, along with another 30 visiting Bishops from other countries. The Church of Uganda has 39 active Bishops and more than 45 retired Bishops who are expected to attend. Lay leaders from the Church of Uganda will also be present. In all, we are preparing for 3,000 – 7,000 people.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THE ENTHRONMENT OF ARCHBISHOP

The service of enthronement will be a regular worship service with readings from the Bible, a sermon, and Holy Communion. In addition to that, the outgoing Archbishop will handover the Provincial Staff – a symbol of the Archbishop’s spiritual authority – to the new, incoming Archbishop. The Archbishop will renew his vows, and the Bishops will also pledge canonical obedience to him. The Bishops will guide the new Archbishop to his Provincial Chair and place him on the Chair, symbolizing that they elected him to lead them and the entire Church of Uganda. The new Archbishop will read his Charge – a kind of manifesto and vision for his ministry, leadership, and strategic direction.

WHO IS PREACHING AT THE ENTHRONEMENT

The Most Rev. Foley Beach, Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America and Chairman of the Gafcon Primates’ Council is preaching at the enthronement (http://www.anglicanchurch.net/index.php/main/Archbishop_Foley_Beach/). Gafcon is a Bible-based reform movement within global Anglicanism whose purpose is to guard and proclaim the unchanging truth in a changing world (www.gafcon.org). The Church of Uganda was one of the pioneering Anglican Churches in Gafcon, along with Nigeria, Kenya, and Rwanda.

Roads worked on by KCCA

WHY IS THE ENTHRONEMENT BUDGET SO EXPENSIVE

1. An enthronement of an Archbishop takes place only occasionally. The last one was 16th December 2012. It’s a national event, so it involves very many people, who have to be seated in the cathedral and in overflow seating in tents, and the tents require a PA system and appropriate screens for broadcasting the service.

2. St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe, serves as both the diocesan Cathedral for Namirembe Diocese as well as the Provincial Cathedral for the entire Church of Uganda. As the provincial Cathedral, every Diocese in Uganda has a specific chair allocated for that Diocese, symbolizing that the House of Bishops, when seated together, exercise spiritual authority over the entire Church of Uganda. Since the last enthronement, three new dioceses have been created. So, the special chairs for those new dioceses must be made and space in the chancel area of the Cathedral needs to be created.

3. The perfect time to do renovation and painting for the Archbishop’s Palace – the official residence of the Archbishop – is when the house is empty, i.e., just before a new Archbishop shifts to the official residence. So, the budget includes significant funds for painting, repairs, and renovations.

4. The incoming Archbishop needs a new vehicle that will carry him all over the country on many pastoral visits to the 37 Dioceses.

5. And, of course, everyone needs to be fed. Food and drinks for several thousand people can get quite expensive.

WHERE IS THE CURRENT ARCHBISHOP

Archbishop Stanley Ntagali has vacated the official residence and is staying in another residence until he hands over on 1st March. He has visited every one of the 37 Dioceses in the Church of Uganda to say farewell, and this month he is saying farewell to parishes in Kampala Diocese.

WHERE IS THE ARCHBISHOP – ELECT

Archbishop-elect Stephen Kazimba Mugalu handed over the Diocese of Mityana to his successor, the Rt. Rev. James Bukomeko, on Sunday, 2nd February. He is now temporarily staying in his personal residence in Mukono until the renovations at the Archbishop’s Palace are completed.  He will then shift to Namirembe on Wednesday, 26th February.

MAYOR SERUNJOJI: Nabukenya’s Suspected Murders Can’t Investigate Her Death, Need An Independent Probe

OPINION

I HAVE painfully failed to come to terms with the death of Ritah Nabukenya, a comrade, who on Monday died in very unclear circumstances while traveling on a Boda Boda.

Kawempe Mayor: Sserunjogi

Police claims she fell off a motorcycle which collided with another in areas of Nakawa, rushed her to hospital and later breathed her last. But, the rider and eyewitnesses continue giving a totally different account.

They say a police truck trailed the deceased and her rider who were both don in People Power attires and consequently caused the accident and rode over her, leading to her death. In fact, it is alleged that Police refused to rush her to the hospital for first aid and medication.

As a result, myself and a bigger public are suspicious and reject the uncoordinated police statement which was by the way backdated (It indicates February 24, 2018 as the date of issue).

The country needs to know the truth and so, an independent probe should be constituted to ascertain all the facts behind her death.

Police which is suspected of murdering this innocent young patriotic mother, can not conduct an independent investigation on itself.

Rest in peace soldier, but we shall not back off until you are served justice.

AUC HAS NO LICENCE: 60,000 MUBENDE – KASANDA EVICTED ARTISANAL & SMALL SCALE MINERS SET TO RETURN AS PARLIAMENT INTERVENES

ENVIRONMENT and Natural Resources Parliamentary committee will on Thursday  February 26th at 10.00am meet with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development on an attempt to resettle over 60,000 Artisanal and Small Scale Miners evicted in Mubende and Kasanda in 2017.

According to reliable sources, this is expected to be a very interesting meeting as the exploration license of AUC company that had evicted them expired and the owners of that company have formed another company and are trying to reapply under another company!

“So will priority be given to the new company or the Artisanal and Small Scale Miners that were evicted?” Asked sources.

INVESTIGATING ISSUES OF GOLD MINING IN KASANDA AND MUBENDE

AUC has been having exploration licences EL 1088 20.9 (SQ KM), EL 1089 (100.85 SQ KM), EL 1093 (207 SQ KM), and EL 1391 for the last seven years.

However, over all these seven years, it has not been undertaking any mining development activities!

According to inspection reports from the ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, there has been concerns about AUC not carrying out the mining plan submitted to the ministry, failure to submit returns as required by law, failure to submit annual financial reports, annual environmental reports, lack of competent personnel to carry out mining development activities and failure to notify the Commissioner Minerals that they had ceased mining activities.

AUC’s argument has been that the Artisanal Miners have been interfering with its exploration activities and as a result run to the president who ordered that, as a compensation for the interference, the licence be renewed 100% contrary to the legal requirement that 50% of the area should have been surrendered on renewal.

Subsequently, on the 4th of August 2020, over 60,000 ASMs were evicted from Mubende and Kasanda mining areas, allegedly to curb the illegal mining activities and encourage mineral development through exploration.

It was also intended to avoid loss of government revenue, use of unsafe mining methods and environmental degradation.

However, subsequently, the president also ordered that the investor should surrender at least 30% of the exploration area (10 sq km), to help resettle the evicted ASMs.

The ASMs have since petitioned parliament, that there is no gold in the area that they were allocated and that they are surrendering the 10 SQ KMs in exchange for one sq km of the area where they were previously operating and where they own land under AUC.

On December 10th 2019, a new company; Cratus Resources Limited, was incorporated with the same directors as the directors of AUC.

It was also registered on the same day with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau as a company with the objective of undertaking business exploration and developing of minerals.

On February 13th 2020, the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources convened a meeting of stakeholders to try and resolve the impasse on the resettlement of the ASMs.

However, Omunyoro Baguma, Director, Geological Surveys and Mines, told the Committee that although legally, AUC’s exploration Licence 1093 was expiring on February 19th 2020, it will continue running outside the law, for another one year, allegedly; “because presidential directives becomes law” and that therefore the ministry could not give any part of land under AUC exploration licence to the ASMs.

On February 20th 2020, according to the cadastre map, the Ministry of Energy accepted an application from Cratus Resources Limited for the exploration area of 159.43 sq kms, previously licenced to AUC under licence EL 1093.

Although, the application is subject to verification of documents, at the moment, no other company can apply for this area.
