IT is with much sorrow that we announce the passing on of Makerere University Professor Noble Ephraim Banadda, the First African Recipient of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences Pius XI Award! He died from Case Hospital Kampala.
According to the family source, Prof. Banadda passed on today after a battle with the deadly Covid-19.
Banadda was a Professor of Biosystems Engineering, a position he attained in 2012 at the age of 37. He was also a Head of Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. This means that Professor Banadda was 46 years old at the time of his death.
Prof. Banadda was a member of MUASA fraternity for only 10 years but has made remarkable contribution to his field of teaching and inquiry.
He has contributed to a number of innovations that have assisted in the advancement of agricultural and food systems in Uganda and beyond. He has been a Visiting Scholar and Professor at many reputable universities in the world and his works are recognised. He was the first African to receive the Pontificial Academy of Science Pius XI Award at the Vatican on 12th day of November 2018. He became a Papal Awardee when Pope Francis awarded him the Pius XI Medal for his outstanding scientific research. He was scheduled to appear before the Search Committee for interviews for the position of Principal of Makerer University College of Agricultural and Environmetal Science (CAES).
